Road to Nant Ffrancon
I was at the top of Nant Ffrancon in North Wales on a frosty morning, looking down a valley carved out by glaciers long ago. Ahead of me were Y Garn and Foel Goch, lit by warm morning sun, with the shadows a deep, cold blue.
A gate stood open onto the old road, now a quiet lane winding down the valley, and the grass beside it was still silvered with frost. It was the colours that stopped me, warm and cold side by side, so bright they almost didn’t look real.
I painted it with a palette knife rather than a brush, which leaves thick, textured ridges of paint that catch the light and give the scene real energy.
