This is the kind of light artists spend their whole lives chasing - low winter sun catching the fleece and casting long shadows across snow-covered fields. I found this little group in Eryri, where sheep are as much a part of the landscape as the mountains themselves.
I painted it in oils on Arches Huile paper, one of my favourite surfaces to work on. The sheep in the foreground is looking straight at you, which was exactly what I wanted - that direct gaze that draws you into the picture. A bright, atmospheric winter painting for anyone who loves the Welsh landscape or the beauty of the British countryside in snow.
